An opportunity to examine the history of nursing and its current professional development in Great Britain, Ireland or the Netherlands.This example is an opportunity for students of nursing to spend a week in London and Southern England witnessing how English nurses train under the National Healthcare System as well as the private sector. Also spend some time gaining an appreciation for the history of the profession through the centuries. As always, this is our suggested program, but we will customize every aspect to suit the needs of any class and faculty requirement. Sample Itinerary


Day One

Depart U.S.

Overnight flight from US to London.

DAY two
Arrive in London

Morning arrival in London. We will be met at Heathrow by a professional guide who and motorcoach for the journey into central London. Enjoy a panoramic introduction to the city including multiple photo stops. Mid afternoon check in at the hotel and settle into the rooms and unpack and relax. Gather together again for an early dinner before retiring for the night.

Day Three

London Workshops. Tours.

Morning lecture and introduction to the British healthcare system. Learn about life before the NHS, it’s evolution and current challenges plus how it functions alongside private care options. The discussion can be tailored to suit the curriculum and study level of your students.


This afternoon we visit the Florence Nightingale Museum to trace the the history of nursing in Britain. Track the story of Nightingale through her time in the Crimea, the pivotal role she played in the crafting of the country's first public health policy with Dr. John Snow, while essentially bed ridden. 


Option:  A public health walking tour is a wonderful visual enhancement to complement student's studies at the museum.

Day Four

Royal College of Nursing & Hospice

This morning we visit the Royal College of Nursing. The RCN represents nurses and nursing, promotes excellence in practice and shapes health policies, it's essentially nurses trade union. Their mission is to develop and educate nurses professionally and academically, building resources of professional expertise and leadership the science and art of nursing and its professional practice. Visiting universities are also often invited to make a brief presentation of their vision of the US healthcare industry and contrast with what they have witnessed during their visit to England.


Afternoon visit to a leading London hospice with a tour of the facility and Q&A with both the medical and administrative staff.

Day Five

London Clinic

Morning visit to a clinic run by a charity specializing in the support of patients living with AIDS. Students learn about their mission and work. It is occasionally possible for us to arrange service learning opportunities in the same field.


At this stage in the program we recommend an afternoon of either independent study or light content. Perhaps visit one of the great medical museums in the city such as the Wellcome Collection, Science Museum or Alexander Fleming Museum.


However more academically intense options also exist such as the Gordon Museum of Pathology, to privately visit this wonderful collection of are medical artefacts as well as receive a lecture on one of many subjects such as the history of trauma or the history of dealing with the dead.

Day Six

Hospital Visit and

the Queen’s Nursing Institute

Morning visit to a top private hospital. A robust private healthcare industry exists alongside the NHS, often sharing the same staff and facilities. 


Afternoon visit with the Queen's Nursing Institute. The QNI is the charity dedicated to improving the nursing care of people in their own homes, a growing trend in England. The QN, influences government policies in England, Wales and Northern Ireland that affect healthcare in the home and the quality of community nursing services. They also develop Queen's Nurses, who are committed to high standards of care in the community, helping them to make improvements in practice and to act as leaders and role models to others.

Day Seven

The Old Operating Theatre

Morning visit to the Old Operating Theatre Museum and Herb Garrett on the South Bank of the Thames River. It is a fascinating look back at the history of surgery and one of the world's oldest operating theatres, built on the site of the original St. Thomas' Hospital.


Afternoon at leisure for independent activities.  Join together this evening for a festive farewell dinner.

Day Eight

Return Home

Regrettably this morning we bid farewell to England and journey to Heathrow for our return flight home.
