London Theatrical Studies

London is the outstanding theatre capital of the English speaking world. With the greatest diversity of musical theatre, classic plays, new works and creative revivals, the depth of offerings, a trip to London is almost "compulsory viewing" for students of theatre. Combine that with the re-launched Royal Shakespeare Theatre in close by Stratford-Upon-Avon and its an irresistible combination. As always, this is a sample program only - all aspects are customized for to your specific needs.

Day 1 – US DEPARTURE

Overnight flight from Gateway City to London.

 

Day 2 – LONDON ARRIVAL

Morning arrival in London and transfer to the hotel. Enroute into the centre, enjoy a panoramic London highlights tour during which we'll see all the major sights of both London's Old City and vibrant West End. We'll drive past such famous sights as Big Ben, Buckingham Palace, Trafalgar Square, then along the river to the Tower of London. London is known for its comprehensive and easy to use metro system, known locally as "the tube". Your Visitor Card will provide unlimited travel on the tube and bus system for your entire stay. This evening we gather for a welcome dinner at the hotel.

 

Day 3 – THEATRE VISITS AND WORKSHOPS

Morning walking tour of "100 Years of London Theatre". Trace theatreland's history from Edwardian Music Hall and Suffragette Drama via revues, musicals, theatre clubs and battles with the censor to subsidy and the fringe. Learn about personalities who have shaped theatre in the past 100 years from Charles Wyndham and Herbert Beerbohm Tree to Andrew Lloyd Webber and Cameron Mackintosh. Following the walk we tour the backstage areas at the theatre Royal Drury Lane. One ofLondon's oldest and best-loved theatres. The first theatre was built here in 1663 and the building we'll tour today is the fourth incarnation. The tour is led by a senior member of the theatre team and can contain emphasis of stage management, technical theatre, theatre management or a more general overview. Tonight we will attend a performance at one of London's famous West End theatres.

 

Day 4 – RADA WORKSHOPS

A top class workshop or seminar is arranged at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts (RADA). RADA's actor training is acclaimed throughout the world. At its heart is the belief that classical training is the best foundation for a career across the many media now available to actors. RADA graduates have achieved success not only in theatre, film, TV and radio, but also in voice-over and computer game development. RADA-trained technicians are amongst the most highly respected in the industry: they include Olivier, Tony and Academy Award nominees and winners. RADA combines some of the best facilities with excellent industry links to ensure that its training prepares students for the challenges of their future profession. A workshop is arranged that will be tailored to the your chosen subject.  The afternoon is available for independent study. Alternatively you may wish to attend a matinee or evening production by RADA students.

 

Day 5 – NATIONAL AND GLOBE THEATRES

This morning a National Theatretour takes you behind-the scenes to see three auditoriums, front-of-house, scenic workshops and backstage areas, all in the company of well-informed, theatre experts. This afternoon we visit Shakespeare's Globe Theatreon London's South Bank. Tour the magnificent reconstruction of this 16th century theatre and enjoy a theatrical workshop on a subject of your choice, led by members of the Globe's highly knowledgeable educational team.  Evening attend a production at one of London's pub theatres which form the basis if the city's fringe scene.

 

Day 6 –  LAMDA WORKSHOP

Select has teamed up with the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA) to launch an exciting and innovative new series of workshops at their new west London studios.

 

Dating its origins back to 1861, LAMDA is the oldest drama Academy in Britain. The Academy is recognized as producing some of Britain's finest young actors, dancers and theatre technicians. It has equally gained recognition as a source of critically acclaimed new writing.

 

A broad selection of workshops include Voice & Verse, Historical Acting, Stage Combat, Historical Dance, Introduction to Musicals and Clown and Buffoon! Most classes are of 90 minute duration allowing for two to be accomplished in a half day session. We can provide you with full details on how these can be incorporated into a complete theatre experience.

 

Afternoon for independent study.  Perhaps visit the magnificent Theatre Collection at the Victoria & Albert Museum which houses Britain's official collection of theatrical memorabilia.   Evening production in the West End or National Theatre Complex.

 

Day 7 – DAY AT LEISURE

Full day at leisure in London.  Alternatively take a full day excursion to Stratford-Upon-Avon.  Here one of our local study guides will conduct a 2 hour walking tour of the town including visits to a couple of the Shakespeare properties.  The brand new Royal Shakespeare Theatre Complex now offers an exhaustive array of lectures and workshops on all of his works, plus tickets to one of the RSC productions at the state-of-the-art Royal Shakespeare Theatre or Swan Theatre.  A pre theatre dinner is recommended at a nearby traditional pub. If you prefer to remain in London for a day of independent study, tonight we recommend a group farewell dinner at a local restaurant or pub, followed by an evening West End performance.

 

Day 8 – RETURN HOME

Departure for the airport and return flight to the US arriving later the same day.
